Foot Protection for the Winter
Summertime is right around the corner! The sun is shining, the days are longer and the weather is warmer. Now is the time to break out the sandals, open-toe shoes or even walk around barefoot when applicable. However, summer is also the time when your feet are prone to infection or injury due partly to the freedom of them hanging out. Here are some tips to keep your feet healthy this summer.
Tip 1: Put sunscreen on your feet, they need protection too!
Most people tend to use sunscreen to protect their bodies during this time, whether they are going to the beach, the lake, or attending an event outdoors. Yet, most people forget to put sunscreen on the tops of their feet.
Sunburn on the tops of your feet can ruin your day! Your feet may seem fine during your outdoor activity but when the sun is beating down on them all day without protection it can cause them pain and irritation for days to come. Protecting your feet with sunscreen is a simple task to help prevent this allowing you to enjoy your outdoor activity with the peace of mind that you are protected from head to toe.
Tip 2: Use caution when walking barefoot!
Walking barefoot is a common theme at the beach, the pool or outside around your house. This is also a common way to contract an infection. A bacterium loves warm, moist places and thrives in these areas. Constantly walking around barefoot can increase your chances of coming into contact with these bacteria.
Be careful when walking around common places where there is heavy barefoot traffic as the possibility of these bacteria being present increases. When applicable try to wear shoes or sandals to prevent your feet from coming into contact with any bacteria.
Tip 3: Wash your feet often!
Another way to prevent your feet from becoming infected is by washing them often. Try washing them at least once a day to remove any dirt and excess sweat that may have accumulated throughout the day. If you do not have access to a shower, try rinsing them with water until showering is available. Tip 4: Proper footwear is key!
Many people wear sandals, open-toed shoes and other similar footwear during this time. Wearing these types of footwear can more often than not increase the risk of injury. Wearing the proper footwear can help prevent the chances of an injury occurring with the increase in outdoor activities during this time.
Also, wear shoes that allow your feet to breathe. During the summer your feet can begin to sweat more due to higher temperatures. Allow some time for your shoes to air out, as bacteria tends to live in warm, moist areas. If possible keep an extra pair of socks to use in case your feet have been sweating for long periods of time.
Tip 5: Let your feet get some air!
Summertime is perfect for letting your feet see the light of day. Your feet just spent the whole winter bundled up from the cold, frigid weather they would like to enjoy the nice weather too!
